Balestrand and the Fjords
Driving from Oslo, the only way to get to Balestrand is via one of the ferries that regularly cruise the fjord. The quaint town is located on Songefjord, Norway's longest fjord. The largest hotel there was once a retreat for Kaiser Wilhelm. The church bears a resemblance to the famous Stave churches.
A pleasant trip up Songefjord will take you to the Glacier Museum at Fjaerland which gives a comprehensive look at how glaciers form and interact. One of the displays at the museum deals with the ancient man who was found buried in the ice in Switzerland and what he has told us about the past. |

Only a short distance away visitors can get close to a glacier in the Jostedalsbreen National Park to have their photos taken with the ice. On the road home they travel through a long tunnel that actually goes underneath the glacier.
