Sacred Heart Church - 1609 Summit Ave.
|
|||||
Sacred Heart is the second oldest Catholic church in town. It was built in 1882. At time it was the only one in both North and South Springfield. The church was built of red brick in a semi-Gothic style of architecture next to a new rectory. It cost about $6,000. The congregation was originally St. Mary's. The sanctuary was demolished by a tornado in November of 1884. After rebuilding it was dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and took its new name. In the 1920s the walls were stuccoed. A small house at Washington and Locust served as a convent and school erected in 1948. A new school was later built. The school closed because of the shortage of nuns and became the Sacred Heart House of Studies for seminarians. Approved: 10/11/76 |
