George McLaughlin House - 730 West Walnut St.
|
||||||||||||
The site on which this house stands was part of the McClure Addition established in 1871. It is believed that an older house previously occupied this lot dating from about 1878 to the construction of the present house about 1905. The former dwelling carried the house number 608 according to the 1878 City Directory until the number was changed in 1889 to 730. In 1878 the house at this address was occupied by Mrs. Nettie Pease Fox and her husband. Mrs. Fox was the leader of the popular Spiritualist movement in Springfield in 1877 which attracted the interest of a number of prominent citizens, and was active over a four year period. She was also the editor of the movement's magazine, The Spiritual Offering. In 1881 the occupants were Rollin S. Eddy, Superintendent of the Springfield Iron Works. Tradition holds that the present house was built by George A. McLaughlin about 1905, and occupied by this family until about 1910. Mr. McLaughlin was an attorney and dealt in real estate.
