McCullah/Pierce House - 625 South Ave.
|
|||||
The McCullah-Pierce House is probably the earliest built on South Avenue. In 1881, the land was sold by Paul Stephens, son of John, to his brother-in-law, James W. McCullah, widower of Annie Stephens. McCullah built the home for his four children by Annie. A Tennesseean, he had served with the Union Army and became a mail contractor. In 1886, he sold the house to Rothwell Seth Waddill, member of a pioneer Greene County family. In 1907, the house passed to John Farrington, a distinguished Springfieldian who was a judge on the Court of Appeals, and husband to Blanche McCann, a daughter of Charles McCann, prominent man of business. This elegant example of the Italiante style featuring bulls-eye windows and heavily bracketed was purchased by a Springfield art teacher, who is restoring it with loving care. Approved: 1/7/85 |
