Christ Episcopal Church - 601 East Walnut St.
|
|||||||
Christ Episcopal Church has the oldest sanctuary still in use in Springfield. The first service was held in this building on New Year's Eve, 1870. The congregation had been organized in 1859. The original church, on West Walnut, was struck by lightning. Lovely Christ Episcopal Church was construed from Michigan white pine timber delivered from Rolla, Missouri, by wagon. The nave, featuring memorial stained glass windows, remains virtually the same as it was originally constructed, despite additions to the church itself. In 1927 and additional nave was put into use, built at a cost of $60,000 and using native limestone in the English gothic style. The belfry is topped with four distinctive pinnacles and crosses. Architectural style: Gothic Revival Approved: 10/28/74 |
