Cherry Mansion

Designed by J.L.Heckenlively, this building was opened in 1914 as Southwest Hospital. Dr. Lowe and D.U. Sherman were the doctors and promoters of the project. It had a modem day operating room on the third floor and was considered a private hospital for Springfield and surrounding communities. It was a small hospital limited to about 25 patients.

The original address was 1010 Cherry. By 1925, it had been sold and converted to Bachelors Inn for young unmarried men attending SMS. Its owner was Mrs. Marjorie Cawthron.

Sometime after 1933 it was converted to Burger Connelly Home, a nursing home. Its address changed to 1030 Cherry. It continued to be used as a nursing home over the years, eventually becoming Cherry Manor with a address of 1330 B. Cherry. Its nursing home license was used in the 1980's to build James River Nursing Home. It was closed in 1992 and has since been converted into office space.
