It was about as close to real war as most Ozarkers cared to be. It was Goldfire, a major exercise for the Army that was conducted in south-central Missouri. For several weeks, the war games saw C-130 aircraft do touch and go landings in open fields and Army personnel and vehicles moving throughout the hills and hollers. |

An important era in the city's history occurred in the 1960's when passenger service was discontinued on the Frisco railroad. Many railroad enthusiasts were on that last train as it made its way from St. Louis to Springfield. |

People from all over the country would trek to the Howell County in midsummer each year for the annual Spacecraft Convention hosted by Buck Nelson. Whether you believed the stories of alien abduction or not, it was an interesting place to visit and observe. |

Parades have long been a part of the Ozarks tradition. Here were two of the biggest during the 1960s. The annual Plumb Nelly Festival at Branson, a draw before the city's grew up is at left.
