Historic Santiago
Presidential Palace Building near Palace
U. S. Christmas tree
The Presidential Palace was the scene of a military coup in 1973 which overthrew the Allende government. The CIA was very much involved in the coup which saw troops firing upon the palace. Buildings surrounding the square (at right) still bear the scars of the bullets fired in that event.
Featured inside the Presidential Palace at Christmas 2002 was a display of decorated trees from countries all over the world. This is the tree representing the United States.
The unique mixture of architectural styles (below) appears on the Plaza da Armas, the central plaza of the city. One of the key features of that skyline is the city's main cathedral.

Pre-Colombian art
The statue of the Virgin Mary (below) is located on the grounds of what is now the Chilean Foreign Ministry. It is a memorial to the 2000 people who died here in a fire in 1863 when a church was located here.

Nearby the Foreign Ministry is a Pre-Colombian museum which has many artifacts from the country's early history.
