Gibson Chapel United Presbyterian Church - 536 East Tampa St.
|
||||
The church was reportedly constructed in 1891 under the leadership of pastor Reverend H.A. Gibson. The congregation had been formed in 1865. There are some doubts, however, whether the existing structure was built then or at a later date following a fire. If the 1891 date is correct it would be the oldest Negro church building in the city. Further significant alterations were made after a fire in 1935. At this time the main entrance was probably changed from Washington Ave. to the Tampa St. side. The church is located near the Jordan River which was used for baptisms. Approved: 10/24/77 |
