Germania Hall - Knights of Pythias - 1226 Boonville Ave.

Pythian Hall, Pythian Castle and Germania Hall all refer to the building that was once located on Boonville Avenue near Calhoun Street. The corner stone lists December 25, 1910, as the date of the building's dedication. Records of the society which built the structure no longer exist and only a few persons associated with the society are still alive. The building served the German-American community in Springfield as a social hall, a place for music, art and other celebrations associated with their heritage. A society of veterans who had served in the German army and navy purchased the property on April 18, l904, but it was not until 1910 that the present brick structure (with partial timber and stucco sections reminiscent of an older German style) was built. The architect had suggested that provision be made for shops in the front should the society ever need the money. On April 16, 1928, the property was purchased by the Pythian Castle Hall Association. It has been demolished.
