Elkins House - 1335 East Meadowmere St.
|
||||
H. Edward "Ed" Elkins (1893-1965) , joined his father in becoming two of Springfield's most talented stone and brick masons. According to Mr. Elkins' son, the late Britt Elkins, Mr. Elkins and his father participated in the construction of numerous historic landmarks throughout Southwest Missouri including the Ed. V. Williams School, Main Library, Central High School gymnasium, certain stone buildings of the Ozarks Empire Fairgrounds, the current Graff Vo-Tech, and at least one other residence at Franklin & Scott, all in Springfield. Mr. Elkins was also said by his son to have worked on the VA Hospital in Fayetteville, two churches in Clinton, a theater in Monett, and an eight story hotel in Rolla. According to his son, Mr. Elkins built the residence at when the elder Elkins was only twenty-one years old, and that the home was built for his bride, Velma. Work on the house was done in the evening and on weekends. However, once the home was completed, Mrs. Elkins refused to move into it saying it was too far out of town, that she would not be able to catch the trolley to visit her friends, and that the house was located in too "ritzy" a neighborhood. The home is unique from any other. All four exterior walls are hand-cut grey stone believed to have been excavated from the quarry at National and East Trafficway in Springfield. Approved: 4/22/91 |
