Bell Telephone Building - 301 South Jefferson Ave.
|
|||||
The first three stories of the steel frame and brick veneer structure were built in 1912. They are sheathed with a limestone veneer with a few stylized geometric details worked into the stonework. The 4th and 5th stories were added in 1948 and are sheathed with terra-cotta. The cornice is a simple band of terra-cotta with a heavier banding between the two upper floors. The entrance has an arched opening in stonework with a classically derived door hood with a balustrade executed in stone with stone consoles beneath the hood. The Bell Telephone Company was for many years the sole owner and principal occupant of the building. In the very early years, approximately half of the first floor was leased to the Southern Missouri Trust Company and later to the Ross Pharmacy. It is now used by Missouri State University.
