Turner House - 427 South Grant Ave.

The Turner House contains a total of 17 rooms in three stories. The house was built by Mr. and Mrs. Paul Ellenbug in the late 1880s or by Leopold Ellenburg in 1890. Occupants have included B.E. Meyer, manager of the Springfield Ice and Refrigerator Company. He was a member of the city council in 1902-03 and mayor in 1904-06. Lyman Turner lived here. He was a member of the charter commission which drew up the first document for the city manager-council form of government and was elected to the first council. He headed the citizens committee on urban renewal and was twice president of the Chamber of Commerce. The only addition to the original structure is a sleeping porch.. Approved: 9/15/75 |
