Landers House - 649 South Ave.

||||||||||||
John Stephens sold the land on which 649 South stands in 1855 but the house itself was not built until 1890 when the property was sold to Charles Walterhouse, an important businessman, for $4,000. Walterhouse sold it to Douglas J. Landers in 1905 for $5,000. Landers, a well-known businessman whose name is on the Landers Theatre, lived there until 1924. The house was later converted into apartments. It was an example of Victorian vernacular at its most lavish. Three, stories high, the tiled roof with low hipped gable is ornamented by a small bower supported by brackets. Large amounts of leaded and beveled glass are indications of the ostentatious manner in which the house was embellished. Approved: 1/7/85 |
