A mighty fortress sits high over the city of Salzburg which it once protected. Today it contains a museum and provides an excellent birds-eye view of the city itself.

A top tourist stop in Salzburg is the home (below) where Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born in 1756 and where he grew up and wrote his first music.
Birthplace of Mozart

Called the "Horse Fountain" (right) this statue marks the spot of a fountain where troops used to water their horses. Nearby is a local street market and shopping area.
View from Eagle's Nest Eagle's Nest

Located not far from Salzburg, in neighboring Germany above Berchtesgarten, is one of the the last remaining reminders of Hitler. Known as the Eagle's Nest, it is perched high atop a mountain and can only be accessed via a long winding road and a ride in an elevator 400 feet up to the crest of the hill. On this day it is barely visible through the early morning haze. During the Nazi regime it was a place to entertain visiting dignitaries and was given to Hitler as a present on his 50th birthday. Today it houses a restaurant. Houses belonging to Hitler and many of his lieutenants, once located at the base of the mountain, have been demolished.
