Munich, Germany, and Dachau Concentration Camp
|

Munich, with 1.2 million people, is the capitol of Bavaria. Like many of the other old European cities its old town section is full of activity both day and night. A highlight of the Munich old town is a cuckoo clock with human figures. A variety of performers appear each evening along the main streets of the old town. |

The highlight of my visit to this part of Germany was not Munich, however, but a small town about 30 miles away home of the infamous Dachau concentration camp. Portions of the camp remain today as a museum and a reminder of a a terrible period in German history. Originally built to house 5000 persons, Dachau was expanded in 1938 to eventually house 206,000 political opponents, Jews, clergymen and other "undesirables." It is estimated that over 31,000 prisoners died here. A visit here is a frightening reminder of what can happen if people are not alert and aware of what is happening around them
