Stoughton/Truman House - 1414 North Benton Ave.

The two story gold brick house was built in 1907 by Mrs. James A. (Elizabeth) Stoughton. The house has retained its original integrity and is virtually unchanged on the exterior. Several prominent families have owned the house over the years. They included Elizabeth Stoughton (1907-17) whose husband was a Commercial St. merchant and owned a third interest in the Springfield Street Railway Co.; Dr. and Mrs. J.T. Evans (1917-1946) an ear, nose and throat physician; and General Ralph Truman ( 1951-1959) a noteworthy military figure and a cousin of the late President Harry Truman. Approved: 8/13/79 |
