Gray/Campbell House - Nathaniel Greene Park
Gray/Campbell House

The Gray-Campbell House, a Greek Revival style farmhouse, was built by James Price Gray circa 1856 and acquired by John Polk Campbell, nephew and namesake of Springfield's founder, in 1865. That family owned and occupied the house until 1983. The house previously stood near the current intersection of James River Freeway and Kansas Expressway. It was moved to its present location in 1984. The house is believed to be the last remnant of early pioneer settlements on the Kickapoo Prairie. It sits on a stacked limestone foundation and is constructed of hand-hewn mortised and pegged timber.
