Eckas/Darnaby House - 1409 North Summit St.
Eckas/Darnaby House

The house was built by Nathaniel Harry in 1888. Mr. Harry was a clerk at Eckas and Sons, a furniture store on Boonville. In 1890, he sold the house to Conrad Eckas who owned the above mentioned store plus the Famous Furniture store on Commercial Street. Mr. Eckas lived on Washington Ave. and rented out this house until the property was sold to William M. Warden in 1910. Mr. Warden was the Assistant Chief Clerk for Frisco Railroad. The house has had several owners since 1920 with most of them working for Frisco. Greg Darnaby purchased the property in 1978 and continues to restore the house.

The single story house is a good example of an early house constructed for the working class. The house is constructed with redwood and cypress lumber. It has lap siding and a partial cornice return on the front elevation of the projecting gable. There is a square bay window on the south elevation and it has decorative brackets and applied wood molding. The porch has square tapered frame posts.
