The church was organized in 1872 by Rev. Spottwood Alexander, to serve the Black community of Springfield and it has done so ever since.

In 1873 John Kelly selected the present location at Benton Avenue and Central Street.

The cornerstone for the building was laid in August 1922, and it was completed in 1926. The original mortgage in 1877 was $20,000.
