In 1968, during the Vietnam War, comedian Bob Hope brought his good humor and support to the troops at Fort Leonard Wood. He entertained all the trips and visited those in the fort hospital.

Tennessee Ernie Ford helped turn the spotlight on Springfield when he broadcast his national television show live, and in color, from the Shrine Mosque. The broadcast was in connection with the opening of the Breech School of Business at Drury College.
TV game show host Bob Barker, a Drury graduate, returned home in 1979 to serve as Grand Marshall of the city's sesquicentennial parade.

Jazz great Woody Herman was in Springfield in the 1970s to work with high school musicians into big band music.
Wayne Grisham
Wayne Grisham was a special person to many young Ozarkers growing up in the 1950s and 1960s. As Captain Briney he came into their homes after school via KTTS-TV and kept them entertained and educated. Read more about Grisham here.
