On the beach in Rio |
|||||||||||||||||
Rio is known, of course, for its beaches. The most famous are Copacabana (upper left) and Ipanema (lower left). A popular pastime, other than sunbathing, is sand volleyball; a popular refreshment is coconut milk. Beach bums with nothing else to do create sand sculpture hoping to gain tourist tips.
A feature of the Ipanema beach scene each Sunday is the Hippie Fair (below). Artists and craftsmen bring their wares and set up in a neighborhood square off the beach. It's a fun place to spend an afternoon if you don't like the sand.
