Khajuraho: The Erotic City | ||||||||||||||||||
The Khajuraho Temples were built before the Muslims put women in seclusion by the Chandelas. They were followers of a form of Hinduism that associated sexual pleasures with divine qualities. That's why many of the intricate carvings on the temples are of an erotic nature.15 The detail at right is about as much as can be shown in a family-oriented web site. The Chandelas ruled from 900 to 1300 and left 85 temples, of which only 22 remain. In another area there are three Jain temples. Jain's were an off shoot of Hinduism. |
