FIRST STORE IN SOUTHWEST MISSOURI LOCATION: South side of the Landmark Building on the northwest corner of Jefferson Avenue and Pershing Street. INSCRIPTION: "SITE OF FIRST STORE IN SOUTHWEST GREENE COUNTY, A LITTLE LOG CABIN, SUPPLIED WITH GOODS FROM BOONVILLE, MISSOURI, 1831, AND CONDUCTED BY JUNIUS CAMPBELL, BROTHER OF JOHN POLK CAMPBELL, FOUNDER OF SPRINGFIELD. MARKER ERECTED IN 1921 BY REPS DRY GOODS COMPANY." The Landmark Building itself is on the Springfield Historical Sites registry. It was at one time the office for the Frisco Railway. The plot is also significant because it once was the site of the first permanent school building, Central School (shown below). |
