Not all work and no play.

Springfieldians have always needed . . . and welcomed . . . opportunities to enjoy themselves and there have been a number of ways in which to do it.

The James River was, and still is, a popular spot for relaxing. Others enjoyed a trip, by street car or train, to one of the private recreational areas surrounding the community.

One of these was Sequiota Park southeast of town which later became a state fish hatchery and is now a public park. It was a good place to relax and part of the fun was just getting there.

Another popular spot, also now a public park, was Doling Park which opened in 1907 in north Springfield. It offered many more attractions than Sequiota, including an exciting boat chute, and later, amusement rides and a skating rink. The park, purchased by the city in 1928, is now being given a complete renovation.

Sequiota Park near Galloway was a popular weekend retreat for city folks. It was fun getting there, too, on a unique Frisco Railroad electric train (below).
Doling Park in north Springfield provided a variety of facilities for boating, swimming and picnicking. After it became a city park roller skating and amusement rides were added, both of which are now gone.
The James River has long been a source of much pleasure for area residents.
