My Favorite Photos

During some ten years of traveling around the globe, I've taken many photos.
Those shown on this page are among my favorite ones from that collection.

I liked the composition of this photo taken in India of a factory producing block printed fabric. This one man hand stamps designs on the large pieces of cloth with machine-like accuracy. This photo was taken in St. Stephans Church in Vienna, Austria. It shows how beautiful and immense the European cathedrals are. This inspiring scene is on the top of the Little Matterhorn which looks across at the famous Matterhorn at the Swiss town of Zermatt. From here you can see four different countries.

It was very foggy the day we visited the Christ the Savior statue overlooking Rio Janeiro. Many people were disappointed they couldn't see the statue well in the fog. I like this photo because it gives a mystical quality to Christ. This photo was taken while flying over the Andes Mountains in Chile. I thought the pattern of the mountains and the clouds gave a three-dimensional effect. I like this photo, taken in the cathedral in Bueno Aires, Argentina, because the shaft of light from above highlights this one particular tourist as she worships at one of the shrines.

The Cathedral of the Resurrection in St. Petersburg, Russia, is an excellent example of the style of architecture most people associate with churches in Russia with the onion domes and fancy trim. It makes an interesting still life shot. This was taken at a memorial in the Highlands of Scotland which honors the Commandos who were trained here during World War II. I like this photo because it places the statue of three Commandos looking out over the terrain in which they were trained. I was intriqued by this photo of Irish school girls who were watching a street performer in Dublin. The expressions on their faces reacting to the performance are priceless.

This arrangement of flowers for sale on a Dublin street caught my attention for the wide range of colors they lend to this still life. No one photo can capture the immensity and overall power of the falls at Iguassu in Brazil and Argentina. But I think this one gives a pretty good sense of the power of the water there and the ever present rainbow caused by the atmosphere created. This shot down one of the streets in Engelberg, Switzerland, captures the beauty and uniqueness of a small town in the Alps.

This photo of flowers taken in Eze, France, is one of my favorites because the texture of the flowers and the lighting gives them a three-dimensional quality. There are many memorials to those people who lost their lives during the attack on the World Trade Center in New York. This one honoring fallen firefighters was particulary moving. The quiet waters of a fjord in Norway provided an excellent mirror for the fluffy clouds and shows the beauty and stillness of the Scandinavian waterways.

At sunrise every morning, hundreds of Indians come to the Ganges River in Varanasi to worship, to bathe, and to socialize. Here a boat of tourists, come to see the ritual, are silhouetted against the morning sun. They still do many things by hand in Ireland such as dig graves in very rocky soil. This photo was taken in Glendalough as a grave digger took a smoke break. I think this beautiful sunset on the island of Oahu, Hawaii captures the sense of what life on the island is all about.

The Transfiguration Cathedral in Kizhi, Russia, has 22 unique cupolas which legend says were built without nails. It is typical of Russian church architecture. The Vietnam War Memorial in Washington DC gets a lot of publicity but the memorial for those who fought in the Korean War is just as effective. A dozen or so lifesize statues of soldiers in that war give a picture of what they had to go through. The combination of fluffy clouds and a still river combined for this painting like image in Limerick, Ireland.

Brightly colored buildings and sailboats almost immediately identify this photo as being taken in Scandinvia. It is in Copenhagen, Denmark. This area, packed after dark, is called "the longest bar in the world." This young lady seems to either be concentrating on playing her mandolin or lost in the bluegrass music in the air at the OzarksFest at SMSU in Springfield, MO. In this one shot you can see a large portion of the country of Monaco. It is less than one square mile in area, a narrow strip of land along the Mediterranean. The valuable space is best used for high rise structures.

The light was just right to capture this waterfall along a fjord near Flam, Norway. My timing in taking this photo at the Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor was good. I caught a sailor pointing out to his family the names of those, possibly even relatives, who died during the attack on Pearl Harbor. It seemed like a difficult way to wash your hands but this young man using a fountain in Populo Square in Rome for that purpose made an interesting photo.

This young man in Izmir, Turkey, was very skillful in balancing his pretzel-like snacks on his head as he wandered the streets in search of hungry American tourists. The color and arrangement of these small boats in Puerto Montt, Chile, resulted in another photo with painting-like qualities. This happy pumpkin family was captured at a recent Cider Days celebration in Springfield, MO.

I love this photo of young people waiting to tour the palace in Queluz, Portugal. Their faces seem to be full of amazement and wonder. On tour children wear colored hats to help teachers keep them together. This photo in the square at Rothenburg, Germany, showed both the architecture of the small town as well as the daily visit to the square by residents to spend some time visiting. A staple of the Russian souvenir vendors are the matrushkas, painted wooden nested dolls. These were on display on a Moscow street.

The girl on the right was helping her grandmother in Goritsy, Russia, host a group of American tourists. Visiting for the summer from Moscow, she seemed very pleased to welcome the guests. This display of t-shirts in St. Petersburg, gives a colorful condensed version of Russian history. The back streets of small towns provide the best look at daily life there. This elderly woman with her food shopping done, gets ready to tackle the grade in Sintra, Portugal. I would have volunteered to help but the language barrier prohibited.

Even though it was August there was still plenty of good snow for skiing in the mountains above Zermatt, Switzerland. The scene is on the Little Matterhorn. Afternoon light creeping into St. Peters Cathedral in Rome gave a very dramatic view of one of the many pieces of religious art in that beautiful sanctuary.
