Ground Zero in New York Today
It's an eerie feeling coming up out of the darkness of the Chambers St. subway station in New York and realizing you are immediately on the scene of one of America's greatest tragedies. It is hard to believe that the huge hole in the ground in front of you was once the base of the two enormous World Trade Towers. After that initial shock, the thing that next registers is how commercialized the site has become. There are vendors all along the streets surrounding the site selling books, t-shirts, caps, models of the structures that are no longer there and other items quickly developed for souvenir-hungry tourists. |

Even though the difficult, emotional job of locating bodies in the debris of the World Trade Towers has not come to an end, there is cleanup work going on at the site. (top) Surrounding the site are buildings that were damaged in the unbelievable explosion ands collapse of the two giant structures. Repairs are underway at some (right) while others (left) sit vacant and draped waiting a decision on their future. In the middle of it all is the large cross formed by steel girders found in the debris. On a fence ringing the nearby St. Paul's Chapel of Trinity Church are expressions of sorrow and admiration from people all over the world. The amazing collection started as soon after September 11, 2001 as visitors could get to the site and continue today in many forms including music. |
